Every month in BBC Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine we will be looking in depth at one of the census years. Ever since 1801 the British government has counted the population of Britain every ten years in what is known as a census. These records are only useful to the family historian from 1841 onwards when people’s names were recorded. Census records are now one of the most important tools for uncovering your family’s past. However, finding out where your ancestors were during one night of 1841 is just part of the story. Here you can find out what life was like in 1841 and over the coming months we will be adding 1851, 1861 etc all the way up to 1901.

We would also like to build up a picture of where your ancestors were on census night in 1841 and who they were living with. Share what you know about them in our 1841 forum and you can help create a snapshot of a day that we will feature in the magazine.
